Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs will celebrate its latest addition to service delivery with a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, September 25 at 11:00 am.

The first facility of its kind nationally, the Atoskewin Success Centre will provide access to Social Development, Employment and Training and Industry to its member First Nations. ‘Atoskewin’, the Cree word for ‘Work’ was chosen as part of the name for the Centre, a ‘one stop shop’ concept to streamline services to clients with a mandate to reduce dependency on Social Assistance. With the support of partners AANDC, HRDC, FSIN – Industry the centre has become a reality.

In 2011, the BATC started administering the Social Development program on behalf of 4 of its member Bands. Last year, BATC aggregated the 3 programs and was successful in reducing Social Assistance clients by about 14%. “Our goal was to reduce dependency by 5%. Compared to the actual outcome, our goal was a modest one. BATC has been recognized to be the only social program in Canada to show a reduction in dependency. Also, providing training for our members, finding employment for them and providing support so that they are successful in maintaining their employment and self sustainability for the long term.” Says Chief Stewart Baptiste, Tribal Chair of Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs.

This innovative approach and success in transitioning members to training and employment opportunities has caught the attention of the Federal Government; with its $240 million Active Measures investment over the next five years on First Nations that target employment & training opportunities for young adults; BATC has shown a return on that investment. Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs will be representing the Federal Government at the grand opening, along with other government officials and First Nations dignitaries.

Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs is located in the north western region of Saskatchewan and provides technical and advisory services to six member First Nations. The location of the Atoskewin Success Centre is 491 114th Street in North Battleford.
