March 26th 2013
(North Battleford, SK) The Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs (BATC) supports the efforts of the Federal Government's investment of $241 million over the next five years on First Nations that target employment & training opportunities for young adults.
"BATC has set a goal of reducing social assistance by 5% annually by transitioning members to training and employment opportunities" says Neil Sasakamoose, BATC Executive Director. "In the first year of our efforts we have been successful in placing about 300 members in a variety of jobs across Saskatchewan and Alberta, and reduced social assistance by about 14%"
BATC participated in a number of forums within the last year to convince the Federal or Provincial government to invest in a model that will provide results. "We had the opportunity to make presentations to both Prime Minister Harper and the Aboriginal Affairs Minister Valcourt, with one purpose in mind, to convince the government that investing into a First Nations labour strategy, will be beneficial to the First Nations and the economy as a whole, it appears our efforts had helped"
Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs is located in the north western region of Saskatchewan and provides technical and advisory services to six member First Nations
