(North Battleford, SK) Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs is proud to have partnered with the First Nations Snowboard Team to form the first ever First Nations snowboard team in Saskatchewan.

In the fall of 2012, SaskSport forwarded information from the First Nations Snowboard Team, who were interested in expanding their existing First Nations snowboard team in Saskatchewan.

“The Chiefs feel this is a great opportunity for our youth for exposure to a new sport. I think it’s a great way to showcase the outstanding athleticism and skill of our local First Nations youth who continue to set the bar. So far the kids I’ve talked to are very excited and eager about adding this event to our Games.” said Chief Stewart Baptiste, Tribal Chair of Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs.

With financial assistance from the First Nations Snowboard Team and a grant from Rivers West District, the BATC Athletics Snowboard Team has been training at Table Mountain since January and will continue to the end of March. The team is training under Murray Ernst and the Riderz snowboard instructors.

BATC Athletics Manager, Lisa McEachern said, “So far, response from the youth has surpassed expectations, but we were able to accommodate everyone. After only a few lessons, I am amazed at the skill level and enthusiasm of the team members”

Training will continue in the winter 2013 with aspirations to expand the team and start competing Provincially.
